PS1 Memory Card Sizes and Types
The PlayStation 1 (PS1) used memory cards to save game progress and settings. There were two main types and sizes of PS1 memory cards.
Standard PS1 Memory Cards
Standard Memory Card Capacity – 1MB
Memory Card Type – PlayStation 1st Party
What it Stores – Most PS1 games save files fit on the standard 1MB memory card.
Expanded PS1 Memory Cards
Expanded Memory Card Capacity – 2 or 4MB
Memory Card Type – 3rd Party
What it Stores – Larger save files, more game saves and/or multiple user profiles.
Common PS1 Memory Card Sizes
1MB – Sony’s official PlayStation memory card. Stores data for most PS1 games.
2MB – Supports more save games and larger games like Final FantasyVII and IX.
4MB – Offers the most space for multiple games and large save files.
How to Use a PS1 Memory Card
To use a PS1 memory card:
1) Insert the memory card into one of the 2 controller slots on the PS1.
2) Select “Memory Card” from the PlayStation menu.
3) Choose a “Card Number” to save game data to (1 – 4).
4) Select a game and “Save Game” to write data to the memory card.
5) Save your game progress as needed while playing.
6) “Turn Off” the PlayStation using the memory card to write final data and properly eject it.
7) Swap memory cards and card numbers as needed for multiple game saves.
