New PlayStation showcase announced for may 24th

Sony finally pulled back the curtain yesterday and revealed that they’ll be hosting the first PlayStation Showcase since 2021 this May! On May 24, 2023 gamers will tune in to get all the latest updates from Sony’s highly-anticipated slate of upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusives.

While Sony was light on details in their initial announcement tweet, the prospect of seeing first looks and updates on key PS5 games like Spider-Man 2, Wolverine and whatever Naughty Dog and Santa Monica have been working on has PlayStation fans buzzing. There’s no shortage of heavy hitters in development at Sony’s PlayStation Studios that could make a potential appearance.

The showcase will likely run around 60 minutes and include new trailers, gameplay demos, and possibly even a surprise or two from a 3rd party developer. Sony has really leaned into exclusives and first party games in recent years so this event will no doubt shine a spotlight on the titles that really show off what the PS5 is capable of on a technical level. Expect incredible visuals, use of the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and lots of attention to details thanks to Sony’s commitment to single player, story-driven experiences.

While companies like Microsoft have made big waves in the games as a service space with Game Pass, Sony continues to double down on delivering cinematic, big budget storytelling through PlayStation exclusives. And with Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, and Guerrilla Games among others, they have the talent to back that up in spades.

Even if we only get updates on games we already know about, like Spider-Man 2, new trailers and gameplay footage of those experiences will likely be enough to satiate gamers hungry for more next-gen PlayStation content. But I’m hoping for at least one or two and even more surprise announcements of entirely new projects in development as well. Sony has been quietly building up an impressive lineup of studios under the PlayStation umbrella, so I expect they have a few unannounced games in the works.

Of course we’ll have to wait until May 24th to see what Sony actually has in store for the showcase, but seeing as 2021’s event included reveals like God of War Ragnarok and the PSVR2, the bar is set pretty high. And Sony hasn’t been afraid to go big with these showcases in the past.

So whether you’re a die-hard PlayStation fan anxiously awaiting updates on all your most anticipated games, or just a gamer eager to see what creative new ways Sony will push the envelope of video game storytelling, May 24 is sure to deliver something for everyone.
