It’s time for another entry into the Need for Speed franchise. So, let’s start our engines and find out about Need for Speed 2022.
I’m sure most of us would agree that Need for Speed played a drastic influence on our growth as gamers. You’ll be hard-pressed to locate someone that can’t remember their favorite entry into the franchise. For me, NFS Carbon and NFS Heat were my favorites. I’d found the customization options and motorsport races to be interesting. There wasn’t anything better than winning the Portview Circuit Race with my McLaren P1 GTR.
I fondly remember my memories with NFS Heat, but those memories could be dethroned in 2022. Electronic Arts confirmed that Criterion is developing another entry into the Need for Speed franchise.
Aren’t you excited? I am. We haven’t seen Criterion develop another NFS game since 2013. That’s when Electronic Arts repositioned them to Battlefront and Battlefield. But everyone is starting to wonder what Criterion Games will do with Need for Speed. So, what do we know about this upcoming title?
When Is Need For Speed 2022 Coming Out?
EA Insider Tom Henderson has suggested that Electronic Arts is launching Need for Speed 2022 in September or October. His claims would follow previous reports that suggested this title would launch before March 31st, 2023. However, minimal information regarding NFS 2022 has been released by Electronic Arts. This has caused me to wonder if Criterion Games is experiencing delays after assisting with Battlefield 2042.
Is Codemasters Helping With The New Need For Speed?
I’m happy to confirm that on February 10th, Tom Henderson announced that Codemasters Cheshire is assisting with the development of NFS 2022. This is a massive announcement because Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters in February 2021.
It’s unlikely that anyone anticipated Codemasters Cheshire would support the development of NFS 2022. But it makes perfect sense because this developer is known for creating motorsport games. Unfortunately, I’m unsure how Codemasters will be involved in the development cycle. Their involvement could be minor or massive. Only time will tell.
Is Need For Speed 2022 Getting Released Onto Xbox And PC?
EA hasn’t provided detailed information on which platforms will support NFS 2022. However, I’m expecting the next installment to be available on the Xbox Series X|S and PC. There should be additional support for the PS4 and PS5. But this is purely speculative on my behalf. Like I’ve said, no confirmations have been made yet. But that should change by E3 2022. I’d be shocked if NFS 2022 wasn’t announced at this event. If it isn’t, we can expect significant delays.
Is the Game Part Of The Game Pass On Xbox?
I’m confident that Electronic Arts will allow Microsoft to release NFS 2022 on the game pass. Why, might you ask? Every recent entry into the franchise is available for download right now. I’d be shocked to see Electronic Arts and Microsoft avoid the addition of NFS 2022. However, I expect NFS 2022 won’t be launched onto the game pass for several months after its initial release date. So, I’ll have to pay the full price to experience NFS 2022 on its launch date. But that’s alright by me.
Unfortunately, information on Need for Speed 2022 is scarce. Electronic Arts, Criterion, and Codemasters have remained silent about their development cycle. It’s meant that players have limited information on the storyline, gameplay, and vehicles. But there are some guarantees you can expect. Criterion won’t divert from the single-player races that this franchise is known to offer. They’ll also introduce some form of multiplayer that everyone can experience. Personally, I’m excited to participate in a new version of Need for Speed’s multiplayer. This game has struggled in recent years to perform with its multiplayer component. Even I’ll admit that NFS Heat’s multiplayer was horrendous.
I hope that Need for Speed 2022 will incorporate a cross-play multiplayer mode like Call of Duty. It would allow everyone to compete against each other, regardless of their console. Plus, I’d be capable of racing against my PS4 and PS5 friends without any concerns of multiplayer limitations. But cross-play multiplayer for NFS 2022 is purely speculative. I haven’t received any confirmations to suggest Criterion is heading in this direction.
Don’t worry; I’ll update you when more information on Need for Speed 2022 is released. Even I’m starting to wonder if we’ll learn about the title for this upcoming game. But make sure to stick around, we’ll eventually receive more information about NFS 2022, and when we do, you’ll be the first to know.
Is the Game Getting A Car Customization Tool?
Though I cannot say for sure, it’s almost guaranteed that Need for Speed 2022 will have customization options. When have we seen a recent entry into this franchise without that feature? I mean, it’s become commonplace to incorporate customization tools with motorsport games; just look at Forza Horizon 5. It’d be unwise for Electronic Arts to compete against Gran Turismo 7 without a car customization tool. At that point, the game would be destined for failure. So I’m confident that Criterion and Codemasters will incorporate multiple forms of customization into NFS 2022.
Game Trailer And Demo
Electronic Arts haven’t revealed any gameplay footage for NFS 2022. But that shouldn’t surprise you, as we know there’s limited information available for this game. Luckily, E3 2022 is right around the corner. That’s when we’ll learn more about NFS 2022 and probably be greeted by our first trailer. So, come back to EarlyGame every now and then, and you’ll be the first to know about a trailer
Game System Requirements
Here’s where things start getting tricky. Most players will need to upgrade their PCs to experience Need for Speed 2022. Even with my Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, I’ll be unable to operate this game at maximum settings. So, which graphic cards and processors are needed to use NFS 2022? I can only guess.
Next-gen consoles
Something that is a lot clearer about this game is the consoles it will launch on. NFS 2022 will be the first time the series is released on the next-gen consoles. That means NFS will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but what about the other systems?
Well, the game will get a PC launch, but the old-gen systems are less clear. While major EA series like FIFA 22 are being launched on PS4 and Xbox One, it’s not certain whether EA will continue this into 2022. It all depends on the supply of PS5’s and Series X’s, which is meant to continue to be limited until at least 2023.
Single player and cars
Single player mode is huge for the old-school NFS gamers. When it comes to this though, we haven’t had any hints about where the story mode will take place, nor what it will encompass.
NFS Heat Early Race
Hopefully though, single player mode will take a backseat to the driving and the customisation. Customisation was the best part of Heat, so we’re hoping Criterion don’t change that. With this being an EA game as well, especially one on next-gen, the graphics and audio will be top-notch.
As for cars, there will no doubt be a good selection on offer. You’ll start off with old muscle cars, and low-performance racers before upgrading to sports cars and eventually, the supercars and hypercars we all dream of racing.
Multiplayer
Again, we don’t have a lot to go on here, but we can make some assumptions. Heat implemented crossplay into the series, so we’d expect that to remain in place. We’re also hoping that races and cop and robbers remain in NFS online.
Something to keep in mind as well, is that Criterion introduced the innovative Autolog system to NFS over ten years ago. This was a social network within a video game that was extremely impressive. Especially you consider that Twitter and Facebook were a shadow of their current forms.
Need For Speed: Most Wanted marked a new era for the series. It was the first to feature a heavy, always-online component, and it was the last developed by legendary racing studio Criterion Games.
Burnout developer Criterion Games took a break from developing Need for Speed this year so that it could help DICE on Battlefield 2042, postponing the next racing game in the series to 2022.
Optimized for PC. Get an unlocked frame rate and experience Need for Speed at 4K resolution, only on PC. Plus, feel the thrill of street racing with steering wheel and peripheral support from a range of manufacturers including Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec.
The next NFS won’t be next-gen exclusive. In the same interview where the delay was announced, Laura Miele, chief studios officer, said the game would be available on the PS5/Xbox Series X as well as their predicessors.
