What the 2026 Met Gala Theme Means for the Intersection of Fashion and Fine Art

The first Monday in May has once again transformed the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art into the world’s most exclusive runway. For 2026, the Costume Institute has selected “Costume Art” as its exhibition focus, challenging attendees to interpret a dress code simply titled, “Fashion is Art.”

Guiding the evening’s artistic vision is a powerhouse group of co-chairs: global superstar Beyoncé, actress Nicole Kidman, tennis champion Venus Williams, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Tech titan Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos serve as the evening’s honorary chairs, while designer Anthony Vaccarello and actress Zoë Kravitz helm the host committee.

Decoding the “Fashion is Art” Dress Code

Unlike previous years that focused on specific historical eras or retrospective looks at individual designers, the 2026 theme strips fashion down to its most conceptual root—its status as a fine art form. Attendees were given the freedom to blur the lines between wearable garments and museum-worthy sculptures.

This conceptual freedom translated into some of the most avant-garde looks the red carpet has ever seen. Olympic gold medalist Eileen Gu embraced the surrealist nature of the theme, wearing a bubble dress by Dutch designer Iris van Herpen that she described as “art in motion.” Model Irina Shayk abandoned traditional fabric altogether, arriving in an out-of-the-box Alexander Wang design constructed entirely from watches, rings, and necklaces. Kim Kardashian, marking her 13th Met Gala appearance, embraced the structural side of the theme in a molded fiberglass top.

A Night of Museum-Worthy Moments

The co-chairs set the standard for the evening’s artistry. Beyoncé, attending alongside Jay-Z and 14-year-old Blue Ivy for her daughter’s Met Gala debut, wore a striking skeletal-inspired piece complete with a feather train. Rihanna—a perennial Met Gala icon who reliably closes the carpet—dazzled in a Maison Margiela creation alongside A$AP Rocky in Chanel.

While fashion heavyweights like Blake Lively (in Versace) and Gigi Hadid (in custom Miu Miu) delivered highly anticipated, on-theme moments, there was one notable absence. Zendaya, who famously co-chaired the 2024 event, did not attend, though her longtime stylist Law Roach walked the carpet.

Once the red carpet concluded, the exclusive guest list traded the cameras for a private viewing of the “Costume Art” exhibition before its public opening on May 10. True to the gala’s secretive nature, a strict no-social-media policy remained in place as guests moved into the Temple of Dendur to celebrate the undeniable reality that, in 2026, fashion and fine art are one and the same.
