Cowboys Fire HC Mike McCarthy After Disappointing Season.
The Dallas Cowboys are in unfamiliar territory this week. After a puzzling turn of events that started with billionaire franchise owner Jerry Jones speaking highly of head coach Mike McCarthy and the job he has done, the franchise decided to part ways with him mere days after turning down the Chicago Bears’ request to interview McCarthy.
The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy have parted ways on Monday after a disappointing 2024 season.
McCarthy and the Cowboys did not engage in discussions about a new deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A report from Tom Pelissero suggested that the length of a deal was the sticking point between the two sides. His tenure in Dallas ends after five seasons, finishing 49-35 over that span.
Recent reports have tabbed the veteran head coach as a potential candidate for the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.
McCarthy, 61, led the Cowboys to a 7-10 record this past season, flattening the fanbase’s high hopes for a Super Bowl-contending year. McCarthy leaves Dallas with a winning record, two NFC East titles and three playoff appearances from 2021 to ‘23, helping the Cowboys win 12 games a piece in each of those seasons.
Meanwhile, the coaching carousel is still going round, with the Patriots being first off the board with the hiring of Mike Vrabel on Sunday. The Jets, Bears, Raiders, Saints and Jaguars are still interviewing candidates, while Mike McCarthy is reportedly out as Cowboys head coach.
The Cowboys lost their first playoff game in January 2022 after Dak Prescott’s infamous scramble as time expired before he could spike the ball. A year later, it was another loss to the San Francisco 49ers where a confusing formation on the final play sealed the deal. Last season, the Green Bay Packers went into AT&T Stadium and demolished McCarthy’s squad — jumping out to a 27-0 lead in the first half en route to a 48-32 win.
Since 2003, the Cowboys have been one of the more stable organizations when it comes to head coaches. They have had just four coaches during that span, with all sticking around for more than three seasons.
