Esiason, Simms out, Matt Ryan in as CBS recalibrates ‘NFL Today’ pregame show

CBS Shakes Up “The NFL Today” Pregame Show with New Analyst

CBS Sports announced a shakeup to its popular NFL pregame show “The NFL Today.”

After lengthy runs, analysts Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason are departing the program.

Replacing them is former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Ryan, who recently retired from playing, impressed CBS executives with his work as a game analyst last season. He’ll join existing cast members James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher, and J.J. Watt (part-time) on the pregame desk.

This comes after speculation of a potential shakeup following the expiration of contracts for several analysts. However, CBS opted to retain Bill Cowher and Nate Burleson.

Phil Simms, who spent 26 years with CBS Sports, announced his departure on Twitter. Boomer Esiason, a 22-year veteran of the show, made his announcement on his WFAN morning radio show. Both expressed gratitude for their time at CBS.

Matt Ryan is a fresh face for the show, but brings a wealth of playing experience. As a former league MVP, he’s expected to offer insightful commentary alongside the established crew.

This move signifies CBS’ desire for a renewed perspective on “The NFL Today.” Fans can look forward to Matt Ryan’s analysis alongside familiar faces when the 2024 NFL season kicks off.
