“I Could Smell Him From A Mile”: Kate Hudson Addressed An Urban Legend About Matthew McConaughey’s Deodorant Habits
Matthew McConaughey has a very distinctive smell, Kate Hudson recently revealed. Appearing on an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Wednesday (July 17), the 45-year-old actress addressed an old “urban legend” that she had once forced the 54-year-old actor to wear deodorant.
Host Andy Cohen read a fan-submitted question to Kate: “Was that old urban legend true that you forced Matthew McConaughey to wear deodorant while filming Fool’s Gold?”
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are one of the most iconic rom-com duos.
Of course, they’re likely best known for starring together in the 2003 film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
They reunited a few years later in 2008 for the film Fool’s Gold.
Indeed, the How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days actress recently responded to a longstanding rumor that she “forced” her costar to wear deodorant while filming Fool’s Gold in 2008.
“No,” she told Andy Cohen during the July 11 episode of Watch What Happens Live. “No, he doesn’t wear deodorant. And by the way, I don’t either. My thing was I could smell him from a mile away ‘cause we got so close.”
And Kate added, “We’re au naturels.”
Of course, their stench wasn’t the only thing that challenged the onscreen couple while filming. In fact, both Kate, 45, and Matthew, 54, have previously harped on another rather gross part of working together on the action comedy.
“The thing is, every time I kiss McConaughey, it’s like, I mean, it’s like there’s just something happening and there’s, like, snot or wind,” Kate recalled to Gwyneth Paltrow on the Goop podcast in 2020. “Like when we were kissing in the end of Fool’s Gold, we’re in the ocean, we had the plane crash—he just had snot all over his face.”
The Interstellar star previously talked about his deodorant stance in a 2008 interview with Playboy, and said Hudson would hint that he needed to do something about his body odor.
‘She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, “Would you please put this on?”‘ he said. ‘I just never wore it. No cologne, no deodorant.’
McConaughey added, ‘The women in my life, including my mother, have all said, “Hey, your natural smell smells, one, like a man and, two, smells like you.”‘
Despite being anti-deodorant, Matthew insisted he took his personal hygiene seriously, claiming to take multiple showers a day and brush his teeth up to five times a day.
Hudson, who was 21 at the time the couple tied the knot, told host Cooper she doesn’t regret her “whirlwind” marriage to musician, then 34. The pair were married from 2000 to 2007 and share son Ryder.
