From the moment President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race over the weekend, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, the internet has been ablaze.
Between tweets about Harris being the hot new bombshell entering the villa, referencing dating reality show “Love Island USA”; fancam edits of the Oakland native, who served as an assistant district attorney in San Francisco in the late 1990s, strutting around, dancing in a pantsuit; and the viral coconut tree meme, which remixes a line from a 2023 Harris speech over songs from Charli XCX’s “Brat” album and other pop hits, fans haven’t missed the opportunity to turn this historic moment into viral comedic gold.
Charli XCX, who is scheduled to co-headline a concert in San Francisco at Chase Center on Oct. 20 with pop singer Troye Sivan, sits at the center of it all following the recent coconut tree remixes and memes of a “Brat” summer that have been circulating since her album’s release in June.
The English singer chimed in yesterday, tweeting “kamala IS brat,” referencing the messy, lime green, partygirl aesthetic of the album that fans have embraced. That post alone sent the “angels,” as Charli XCX followers are affectionately called, deeper into a frenzy.
Among the most popular memes was a “fancam” — a style of video that compiles short clips of a celebrity and usually featuring a trending song — of Harris delivering her now-viral “coconut tree” speech and dancing with Charli xcx’s “Von dutch” playing.
The video, originally posted July 3, has amassed over 3.6 million views on X. One user posted the video with the caption “I’m not kidding, she should run this as an ad if she becomes the nominee.”
“kamala IS brat,” the British singer and songwriter said in a post to X that quickly went viral.
By midday Monday, Harris’ campaign had run with the meme. The banner on its X page said “kamala hq” with a neon green background and lower-case letters, similar to the cover of Charli XCX’s album “Brat,” which debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart last month and has led some in Gen Z to deem 2024 “brat summer.”
Similar graphics appeared on the Harris campaign’s Instagram account, which is full of memes that have taken off with younger audiences.
