The Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga debuted on May 16, 2016 and was initially written by Ukyō Kodachi until volume 13, after which Masashi Kishimoto took over the manga. The anime series debuted not even a year later, on April 5, 2017 and is still ongoing, with more than 200 episodes as of October 2021.
Is Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Good?
The anime is set years after the Fourth Great Shinobi War, when Naruto Uzumaki has fulfilled his dream of becoming the seventh Hokage, thus supervising a new generation of ninjas. The Konoha hero has married Hinata Hyuga, with whom he has two children: Boruto and Himawari.
Boruto is part of the ninja team, led by Konohamaru Sarutobi, and complemented by Sarada Uchiha, the daughter of Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, and Orochimaru’s artificial son, Mitsuki. Boruto considers that Naruto puts his duties in the village before his duties to his family.
Little Uzumaki meets Sasuke, who has returned to the village to warn Naruto of an impending threat. There is little time left for the development of the next edition of the Chunin exams, so Boruto asks Sasuke to become his teacher, to which the Uchiha replies that he will, as long as he can learn to master the Rasengan, to which he replies that this is not a problem, because he will master it in a short time, and to achieve it, he requests the help of Konohamaru.
His eagerness to obtain a higher rank, leads him to cheat in the exam, using a device called “Kote”, invented by Katasuke, who is part of the scientific team of ninja weapons of Konoha; as a consequence, Naruto disqualifies him during the fight against Shinki, Gaara’s son.
Such actions generate a discussion between father and son, which is interrupted with the appearance of Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, characters that Sasuke warned Naruto about; the main objective of the attacks is to kidnap Naruto and thus be able to use Kurama’s chakra to revitalize the dying Shinju of the dimension they came from.
Seeing his father risk his life to protect everyone, a repentant Boruto convinces Sasuke and the five Kage to join them in Naruto’s rescue mission. Thus, they travel to another dimension to save Naruto; the combat seems to tilt in favor of the Kages and company, Momoshiki turns Kinshiki into a chakra fruit to increase his strength, even so, it does not turn out to be a sufficient rival for the joint attack, which Naruto has already joined.
However, unfortunately for everyone, Katasuke intervenes and attacks Momoshiki, using the jutsu contained in the Kote, a chakra that the latter absorbs using his Rinnegan, which provides him with energy to continue fighting. While Sasuke distracts Momoshiki, a weakened Naruto, he lends his remaining chakra to Boruto and thus forms a giant Rasengan to defeat Momoshiki.
Although he dies, noticing the untapped potential of his murderer, Momoshiki lives long enough to have a private conversation with Boruto, on another plane of reality, and warns him that soon, he will face moments of much tribulation. Not knowing what the future holds, Boruto accepts his fate.
What about the plot of Boruto?
This plot outline of Boruto tells us a lot about the anime itself. The plot is certainly moving away from Naruto and the original characters, but they are still a presence, especially Naruto and Sasuke. The general plot outline has and will continue to feature stories similar to the ones from Naruto, but with a twist.
In the most essential sense, Boruto is just a continuation of the Naruto series and doesn’t really stray away from the series itself. Boruto is, in that aspect, a good anime series, and most fans and critics will agree with that assumption. So, if you liked the original Naruto series, Boruto will certainly entertain you, although it does not really equal Kishimoto’s original work.
Is Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Worth Watching?
Now, in order to discern whether Boruto is actually worth your time, we have to analyze the show’s structure. As of October 16, 2021, a total of 223 episodes have either aired or been scheduled by the producers and the broadcaster. The episodes are split into five seasons, with the first four having roughly 50 episodes each, so it’s expected that the ongoing fifth season is going to have that many as well.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations follows the same format as the original Naruto series, both of them, and, as we have established, keeps the same narrative essence as the two original shows. This certainly speaks for itself and will see Naruto fans enjoy themselves with Boruto.
An issue people often have with the series is the fact that it contains very little manga content, but, on the other hand, it also has very few fillers. The latter fact is a great thing, mainly because Naruto and especially Naruto: Shippuden are notoriously known for being filled with fillers (pun intended), which is why a lot of fans actually tend to skip a lot of the anime’s content.
Boruto doesn’t have that many fillers, that is true, but it also doesn’t really adapt the manga that faithfully. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has a lot of original anime content, which is still considered canon, but it doesn’t really reveal what happens in the manga, which is the primary source for the series. This can be a tad annoying, but luckily enough – the original content is mostly good so you can watch it normally.
This brings us to the conclusion that Boruto is definitely worth watching. Sure, it might not be as great as Naruto, but it is nevertheless a great show with intriguing plots that keep the essence of the Naruto series. The animation is great and the writers have managed to expand the world of shinobi established in Naruto, which is more than enough for you to finally approach the series.
So if you had any doubts, we definitely recommend you watch it right now.
How Does Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Compare to Naruto?
Now, the biggest issue with Boruto is that fans think that it doesn’t really come close to the vibe of the original Naruto series. And while that might be true, Boruto has some elements that are better than Naruto‘s, while there are also those that are inferior to the original series. We shall analyze them in this section.
In terms of plot and characters, Boruto is somewhere along the lines of Naruto, but most fans will agree that it is not as good as the original series. Maybe it’s just nostalgia, maybe it’s just a result of the show having too much original anime content when compared to the manga, or it’s just a fact that the story of Boruto is not at good as that of Naruto. Whatever it might be, people are generally in agreement that Boruto is inferior to Naruto in terms of plot and characters.
On the other hand, when it comes to filler content, Boruto is significantly better than Naruto, having only a low 13% of filler content, which makes it much easier to watch. Sure, the original anime content might be an issue for some, but on a general level, this is where Boruto takes the points.
The animation is also much better, but that is understandable since animation standards have significantly increased since Naruto originally aired. But, this is rather irrelevant to most people, who want a good story rather than a technically superior anime.
To sum it up, Boruto is not as good as Naruto and that is what practically everyone agrees on. Still, Boruto is far from bad and if you actually liked Naruto, there is no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy Boruto as well, which is why we recommend you watch it.
Boruto’s Anime Will Go On A Short Hiatus
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations might be moving past the events of its manga series, but that isn’t stopping Konoha from experiencing plenty of new stories that make serious changes to the world of this popular Shonen franchise. With the Chunin Exams recently taking place in the anime series, it seems as though the television series will be taking a brief hiatus to ring in the new year as the Hidden Leaf Village ninjas continue to fight to protect their home.
The episode in question, “A Rusted Sword,” will apparently be delayed from its original air date of January 2nd to January 9th, with the Shonen franchise revealing an official description of the upcoming installment:
“An incident has occurred where a travelling merchant has been attacked by robbers. lzuno Wasabi, Suzumeno Namida, and Kurogane Tsubaki of Team 15 have been assigned to investigate the situation. Then, Tsubaki makes a discovery – The evidence seems to be related to the Samurai from her hometown in the Iron Country. In addition, Tsubaki suddenly recognizes one of the perpetrator’s marks that were left behind.”
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations‘ anime might be telling original stories for quite some time, with the Vessel Arc taking place relatively soon in the pages of its manga. With the battle against Code only just beginning in the printed page following the death of Jigen and the loss of the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox, the anime-only stories are venturing into new territory for the Hidden Leaf Village and making changes to the lore that have yet to be seen in the manga, including Sarada’s promotion and Kawaki’s journey to become an official member of Konoha’s ranks.
The anime series debuted not even a year later, on April 5, 2017 and is still ongoing, with more than 200 episodes as of October 2021.
Naruto Shippuden is closely related to Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and hence, is the perfect show to watch right after. This series forms that premise of Baruto’s story and also gives you some background knowledge of Baruto’s world. If you are a fan of long storylines, this is just the right choice.
After endless filler episodes, the Boruto anime is set to adapt the manga when 2020 begins. With the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime finally set to begin adapting the manga when 2020 begins, now is the perfect time for Naruto fans to pick up the sequel series.
There will be a future boruto but not with the name shippuden. More than likely not, because the anime started with what could turn out to be one of its final fights.
