‘Romeo and Juliet’ Star Olivia Hussey Passes Away at 73

Olivia Hussey, renowned for her iconic portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, passed away on December 27 at the age of 73. Her death was confirmed by filmmaker and friend Marc Huestis, who cited cancer as the probable cause.

Hussey’s family shared the news on her Instagram account, expressing their grief while celebrating her profound impact on the film industry. “She went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones,” the statement read.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1951, Hussey rose to fame at 16 with her career-defining role opposite Leonard Whiting. The film, celebrated for its youthful energy and groundbreaking approach, remains a seminal adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. Despite the global acclaim, Hussey’s career struggled to sustain the same momentum, though she earned accolades for roles in films like Black Christmas (1974) and Death on the Nile (1978).

Hussey’s later life was marked by controversies, including a 2023 lawsuit against Paramount Pictures over the nude scene in Romeo and Juliet. Despite the dismissal of the case, she remained an enduring figure in cinematic history.

Survived by her children and husband David Eisley, Hussey’s legacy endures through her contributions to film and her unforgettable portrayal of Juliet, a role that captivated generations.
