Tickets for the screenings are on sale for five dollars, with proceeds benefiting the Mac Miller Fund.
In collaboration with Warner Records, Miller’s indie label Remember Music is producing the film alongside Hornet Studios. Fans who attend screenings in New York City, Toronto, London, Paris, Melbourne, Berlin, Sydney, Dublin and Auckland will receive limited-edition “Balloonerism” memorabilia.
The film is directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, who helmed Miller’s 2021 music video for “Colors and Shapes.” The project is executive produced by Michael Feder, Greg Bedard and Hana Shimizu, with Heather Hardin also serving as an executive producer.
According to a statement from Miller’s estate in November, “Balloonerism” is a 14-track LP created around the time of “Faces” and was a significant priority for the late rapper. It includes a feature from SZA on its second track, “DJ’s Chord Organ.”
Mac Miller Balloonerism Film appears to be animated, led by animation director Stephanie Demeautis.
The story was developed by Sam Mason and Roland Kennedy.
“This project was extremely important to Malcolm,” the estate stated. “He had commissioned artwork for it, and there were frequent discussions about its release, though ultimately ‘GO:OD AM’ and subsequent albums took precedence. We believe ‘Balloonerism’ reveals both his expansive musical talents and his fearless artistic approach. Since unofficial versions have been circulating for years, and Malcolm frequently discussed how much releasing it mattered, we felt it most fitting to present an official version of the project to the world.”
Miller died of an accidental overdose in 2018. Two years later, his estate released the posthumous album “Circles,” envisioned as a companion piece to his 2018 album “Swimming.”
