Musk: Tesla senior team investigating Cybertruck explosion

Billionaire entrepreneur and SpaceX and Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk took to social media platform X to announce that the entire Tesla team is investigating the Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion at Trump Tower, which local authorities hint may have been a terrorist attack.

The incident comes amid reports of Tesla CEO Elon Musk growing closer to US President-elect Donald Trump.

Musk reportedly spent New Year’s Eve at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property and attended a dinner with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. According to The New York Times, Musk has been staying at a cottage on Trump’s Florida estate since Election Day.

“There is one deceased individual inside the Cybertruck and I don’t know whether it is a male or a female at this time,” McMahill said.

According to officials, a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck pulled up to the Trump Hotel glass entrance doors before exploding.

Seven other victims sustained what McMahill described as “minor” injuries as a result of the explosion.

Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge of the FBI in Las Vegas, also confirmed during the news conference that his team is involved in the investigation.

Witnesses described a “massive explosion” near Trump Tower in Las Vegas, with one person reporting a series of loud “boom, boom, boom” sounds that rattled the surrounding area.

Local footage shows police and firefighters rushing to the scene by the 64-story luxury building, renowned for its “stunning views” of the Strip.

In a statement posted to X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: “The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now. Will post more information as soon as we learn anything. We’ve never seen anything like this.”

The FBI Las Vegas also said in a statement to NBC News that it “has personnel on scene to offer assistance to our local partners, who handled the initial response.”

In a statement from the Trump Organization, which was also shared by President-elect Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump on X, the organization acknowledged that “a reported electric vehicle fire occurred in the porte cochère of Trump Las Vegas.”

We haven’t yet found a video of the vehicle catching fire in the first place, but several others on X say they witnessed an “explosion” and captured videos of the rising smoke. Alcides Antunes, whose image tops this story, says the car first caught fire, then there were three big pops that might have been batteries exploding. Max Radford claimed there were multiple explosions; Stephen Felando claimed the windows shook violently on the 53rd floor of the building.
