The mystery surrounding Christopher Nolan’s next cinematic venture has been unveiled, and it’s a monumental shift for the director. Universal Studios confirmed Monday that Nolan will adapt The Odyssey, the timeless epic by Homer that chronicles Odysseus’ perilous journey back home after the Trojan War.
“Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology,” stated the studio. “For the first time ever, this legendary tale will come to life on IMAX screens, and the film will premiere in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.”
The star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron, adding to the immense anticipation surrounding the project.
Nolan is no stranger to period pieces, having previously explored historical narratives in Oppenheimer, which chronicled the creation of the atomic bomb, and The Prestige, a tale of rival magicians set in 1890s London. However, The Odyssey represents a bold departure for Nolan, as Homer’s 8th-century epic brings gods, goddesses, and fantastical monsters into play—elements that contrast sharply with Nolan’s previous works.
Though Nolan’s storytelling has primarily focused on grounded, realistic themes—like bringing Batman into a post-9/11 world or exploring shared dreams in Inception and intergalactic travel in Interstellar—this new project promises to push the boundaries of both fantasy and technology.
