Ace<\/strong>

AFK<\/strong>
“Away From Keyboard.” A player who has disconnected or stopped playing mid-match. In ranked play, going AFK can result in penalties or bans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agent<\/strong>
In Valorant, the playable characters you select at the start of a match, each with unique abilities. Not to be confused with a sports agent or talent representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aggro<\/strong>
Short for aggressive. A team playing aggro is pushing forward, taking fights, and applying pressure rather than playing defensively. Also used as a noun: “they’re taking aggro from that turret.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aim Duel<\/strong>
A direct 1v1 confrontation between two players where mechanical aiming skill determines the winner, with little room for ability usage or strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All-In<\/strong>
Committing everything to one decisive play \u2014 all resources, all abilities, all players \u2014 with no backup plan if it fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anchor<\/strong>
A player who holds a position defensively while teammates execute elsewhere. In CS2, the anchor stays on a bomb site to defend against retakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AoE<\/strong>
“Area of Effect.” An ability or attack that damages or affects multiple targets within a radius rather than a single enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

APM<\/strong>
“Actions Per Minute.” The number of inputs a player makes per minute \u2014 crucial in strategy games like StarCraft. Elite players regularly exceed 300 APM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arc<\/strong>
The narrative trajectory of a team or player over a season \u2014 rising, falling, redemption runs. Often used in fan discussion: “T1’s arc this split has been incredible.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u2013C<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Backdoor<\/strong>
Attacking an enemy’s base through an unexpected path while the main battle is elsewhere. Risky but potentially game-ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bait<\/strong>
Deliberately acting as a decoy to lure enemies into a trap, or using a teammate as bait (often controversially).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ban<\/strong>
In draft phases, banning removes a champion, agent, or hero from the match \u2014 neither team can play that pick. Also refers to account bans for rule violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baron \/ Baron Nashor<\/strong>
League of Legends’ most powerful neutral objective. Killing it empowers your team with a buff that turbocharges minions. Contesting Baron is one of the most critical decisions in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best of 3 \/ Best of 5 (BO3 \/ BO5)<\/strong>
A series format where teams play multiple maps or games, with the winner determined by winning the majority. BO3 = first to 2 wins; BO5 = first to 3. Grand finals are almost always BO5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Body Block<\/strong>
Deliberately stepping in front of a teammate to absorb an incoming attack or projectile, usually sacrificing yourself to save a more important player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bot Lane<\/strong>
In League of Legends, the bottom lane of the map. Typically occupied by the ADC and Support duo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bracket<\/strong>
The visual structure of a tournament that shows match pairings and the path to the grand final. Brackets can be single elimination, double elimination, or hybrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buff<\/strong>
A positive status effect or, in patch notes, a developer change that makes a champion, weapon, or ability stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burst<\/strong>
Dealing a large amount of damage in a very short window of time. Burst damage can eliminate enemies before they have time to react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy Phase<\/strong>
In CS2 and Valorant, the period at the start of a round where players spend their currency on weapons and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Call<\/strong>
A shot-caller’s instruction to the team \u2014 “rotate B,” “smoke CT,” “fall back.” Good in-game calling is a major component of team strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camp<\/strong>
Staying in one position for an extended period, often ambushing enemies who pass through. High kill potential, frustrating to play against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carry<\/strong>
The player (or role) responsible for dealing the most damage and winning team fights. Also a verb: “he carried that game singlehandedly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caster<\/strong>
The commentator or analyst providing live verbal coverage of a match. Play-by-play casters call the action; colour casters provide analysis and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC<\/strong>
“Crowd Control.” Abilities that restrict enemy movement or actions \u2014 stuns, slows, silences, roots. High CC compositions are often dominant in team fights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clutch<\/strong>
Winning an impossible-looking situation, usually outnumbered or with no resources. A 1v4 clutch to win the round is the kind of moment that makes highlight reels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach<\/strong>
The person who develops team strategy, reviews VODs, manages player performance, and guides mental preparation. Separate from in-game leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contest<\/strong>
Actively fighting for an objective rather than conceding it. “Do we contest the dragon or let it go?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counter Pick<\/strong>
Selecting a champion or agent specifically because it is strong against what the opponent has already chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creep Score (CS)<\/strong>
In MOBAs like League of Legends, the number of minions and monsters a player has last-hit for gold. High CS indicates efficient farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u2013F<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dead Lane<\/strong>
A lane in a MOBA where one or both players have died, creating an opportunity for the enemy team to take objectives elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defuse<\/strong>
In CS2, the Counter-Terrorist action of disarming the planted bomb before it explodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deny<\/strong>
Killing your own units before the enemy can last-hit them for gold. A key mechanic in Dota 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dive<\/strong>
Aggressively pushing into the enemy’s protected areas \u2014 tower diving in League of Legends, or diving behind their lines in a team fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Draft<\/strong>
The pre-match phase in MOBAs and some other games where teams alternately pick and ban heroes or agents. Draft strategy is a significant part of pro play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drop<\/strong>
When a player or team performs well below their usual standard. “They completely dropped off in playoffs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco<\/strong>
A “forced economy” round in CS2 or Valorant \u2014 intentionally buying very cheap equipment to save currency for the next round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economy<\/strong>
In CS2 and Valorant, the resource management system of earning and spending in-game currency. Managing economy \u2014 knowing when to save, when to buy \u2014 is a core skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elo<\/strong>
A rating system (originally from chess) used in many competitive games. “Elo hell” is the (often disputed) idea that a certain skill bracket is impossible to climb out of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Execute<\/strong>
A coordinated team attack on a specific site or objective using pre-planned utility (grenades, flashes, smokes). “Executing A” means running a set play on site A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farm<\/strong>
Killing neutral or enemy minions to accumulate gold and experience. “He’s been farming for 20 minutes” \u2014 sometimes a criticism, sometimes a valid strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feed<\/strong>
Dying repeatedly to the enemy, giving them gold and experience. “Stop feeding the Jinx” is a phrase every LoL player has heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flash<\/strong>
A utility item or ability that repositions a player instantly \u2014 either escaping danger or surprising an enemy. Also refers to the Flashbang grenade in CS2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flank<\/strong>
Attacking the enemy from the side or rear rather than head-on. Flanking can destroy a team’s formation if timed correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Force Buy<\/strong>
Spending all available currency on weapons even when your economy is weak, gambling on winning the round rather than saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frag<\/strong>
A kill. “He got the opening frag” = he got the first kill of the round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Full Buy<\/strong>
Purchasing a complete loadout \u2014 rifle, full armor, utilities. The ideal economic state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u2013L<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Game Sense<\/strong>
The ability to read situations, predict enemy movements, and make smart decisions without needing to see everything directly. Often considered more valuable than raw mechanical skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GG<\/strong>
“Good Game.” Said at the end of a match as a gesture of respect. “GG WP” = “Good game, well played.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grand Final<\/strong>
The championship match of a tournament, played between the two remaining teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gank<\/strong>
A surprise attack, usually by a third player arriving from an unexpected angle to assist a teammate in a 2v1 or 3v2 situation. Common in MOBAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heal<\/strong>
Restoring health points. In team compositions, having reliable healing can determine sustainability in long fights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hero<\/strong>
The playable character in MOBAs (Dota 2) and some other games. Each hero has unique abilities and roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyper Carry<\/strong>
A champion or hero that becomes disproportionately strong in the late game, able to eliminate entire teams if left unchecked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IGL<\/strong>
“In-Game Leader.” The player responsible for calling strategies, making real-time decisions, and adapting the team’s approach during a match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initiate<\/strong>
The act of starting a team fight, usually by a tank or support player who can absorb damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jungler<\/strong>
In League of Legends and other MOBAs, the player who moves between lanes killing neutral monsters (the “jungle”) and ganking to assist their teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KDA<\/strong>
“Kills \/ Deaths \/ Assists.” The basic performance stat. A KDA of 10\/2\/5 means 10 kills, 2 deaths, 5 assists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiting<\/strong>
Moving constantly while attacking \u2014 staying at range to deal damage while avoiding getting hit in melee range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lane<\/strong>
The fixed paths connecting each team’s base in a MOBA. Most games have top, mid, and bottom lanes, with a jungle between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Hit<\/strong>
In MOBAs, landing the killing blow on a minion to collect gold. Missing last hits is one of the most common mistakes at lower levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LFT<\/strong>
“Looking For Team.” Posted by players actively seeking a team to join, often on social media or community forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loot<\/strong>
Items, currency, or rewards collected during a match \u2014 essential in battle royale games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Map Control<\/strong>
Controlling key areas of a map \u2014 choke points, objectives, information zones \u2014 to limit the enemy’s options and expand your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matchup<\/strong>
The interaction between two opposing players or compositions. Some matchups are favorable, others are counters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta<\/strong>
“Most Effective Tactics Available.” The dominant strategy or champion\/agent pool at any given time, shaped by patches, pro play, and community discovery. The meta shifts with every major update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mid<\/strong>
The middle lane in a MOBA; also used to describe the middle area of a CS2 or Valorant map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moba<\/strong>
“Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.” The genre that includes League of Legends and Dota 2 \u2014 two teams fight to destroy the other’s base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nerf<\/strong>
A developer change that weakens a champion, weapon, or ability. The opposite of a buff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objective<\/strong>
A key target that provides a strategic advantage \u2014 Baron in LoL, the Spike in Valorant, the bomb sites in CS2. Securing objectives often wins games regardless of kills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-Tank<\/strong>
A secondary tank-role player who provides additional front-line presence without being the primary damage absorber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One-Tap<\/strong>
Eliminating an enemy with a single shot or hit. Used in CS2 and Valorant to describe precise, decisive headshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Qualifier<\/strong>
A tournament stage open to any team, used to find teams that deserve a spot in the main event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Org<\/strong>
Short for organisation \u2014 the company that owns and manages esports teams across one or more titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peel<\/strong>
Using abilities or positioning to protect a teammate from enemy focus, “peeling” enemies off them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick<\/strong>

Plant<\/strong>

Play-In<\/strong>
A preliminary stage of a tournament where lower-seeded teams compete for entry into the main event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poke<\/strong>
Dealing chip damage from a safe distance without committing to a full team fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psyche<\/strong>

Retake<\/strong>
In CS2 and Valorant, the Counter-Terrorist move of fighting back into a bomb site after losing control of it to plant the bomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rotate<\/strong>
Moving from one area of the map to another to assist teammates or respond to enemy movements. “Rotate B” = go help the B site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round<\/strong>
A single unit of competition in games like CS2 and Valorant. Matches are made up of multiple rounds; the team that wins enough rounds wins the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosters<\/strong>
The players that make up a team at any given time. Roster changes (transfers, benches, signings) are among the most-discussed topics in esports news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rush<\/strong>
A fast, aggressive push \u2014 usually in CS2 where an entire team floods a single bomb site before the enemy can react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scout<\/strong>
Gathering information about enemy positions without engaging. Also a role in some esports games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seed<\/strong>
A team’s ranking entering a tournament, determining their bracket placement. The #1 seed faces easier opponents in early rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smurf<\/strong>
A high-level player using a secondary account in lower-ranked games, gaining an unfair advantage against less skilled opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solo Kill<\/strong>
Killing an enemy in a 1v1 lane situation without assistance. A demonstration of mechanical superiority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Split Push<\/strong>
A strategy where one player applies pressure in a separate lane while the team creates a diversion elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stomp<\/strong>
A decisive, one-sided victory. “We got stomped” = the enemy team won easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweat<\/strong>
Playing at maximum effort and intensity, usually in a casual context. “He’s sweating in unranked” is often a mild criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tank<\/strong>
A durable player or character who absorbs damage for the team, often initiating fights and protecting carries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tilt<\/strong>
Entering a negative mental state after losses or mistakes, which leads to worse decision-making and performance. “I’m on tilt” is one of the most relatable phrases in competitive gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tournament Organiser (TO)<\/strong>
The company or organisation running a tournament \u2014 managing logistics, prize pools, broadcast, and competition rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Lane<\/strong>
In League of Legends, the upper lane of the map. Usually occupied by durable, tanky champions who can hold their own in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade<\/strong>
Exchanging kills \u2014 one player kills an enemy while being killed themselves. Whether a trade is positive depends on which player was more valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troll<\/strong>

Non-direct-combat tools: grenades, smoke screens, flashes, healing items. Good utility usage is a hallmark of professional play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VOD<\/strong>
“Video on Demand.” A recorded match. Professional players spend hours reviewing VODs to study both their own play and opponents’ tendencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall Hang<\/strong>
Holding a position at a corner or angle, waiting for an enemy to walk into your crosshair. A fundamental and contested strategy in FPS games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ward<\/strong>
In MOBAs, a visibility-granting item placed on the map to reveal enemy movements. Warding effectively is crucial to high-level play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrist<\/strong>
Referenced in the context of injuries \u2014 repetitive strain injuries to the wrist are one of the most common physical ailments for professional players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoning<\/strong>
Using positioning, abilities, or threat to keep enemies out of a specific area without directly attacking them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
