Welcome to our absolute beginner\u2019s guide<\/strong> for League of Legends<\/strong>, in this guide we\u2019ll cover the fundamental basics of how LoL<\/strong> is played. Whether you\u2019re thinking about playing the game, just downloaded it, or still learning the ropes, this guide is for you!<\/p>\n

What is League of Legends?<\/h2>\n

League of Legends<\/span> is a multiplayer online battle arena, also known as a MOBA. It\u2019s been one of the most popular games<\/strong><\/a> of all time and currently one of the biggest esports.<\/p>\n

In a standard game of League, ten players are split into two teams of five and battle it out on a map called Summoner\u2019s Rift. Each of these players controls a single character, known as a champion.<\/p>\n

LoL Champion Basics<\/h3>\n

Now that we understand the basics of the map, let\u2019s get back to talking about champions. Champions are the heart and soul of League of Legends as they\u2019re often what players resonate with most.<\/p>\n

While Summoner\u2019s Rift stays constant, the different combinations of champions that are chosen by the ten players in game can create vastly different rhythms and feels.<\/p>\n

Right now there are currently over 140 champions, each of them representing a different playstyle and experience.All LoL championsSome are simple and easy to play while others may take a hundred games to master. Whether you like dealing damage from afar, brawling at close quarters, or helping your team with utility, there\u2019s a champion for you.<\/p>\n

In the next few sections, we\u2019ll discuss different aspects of champions, such as their abilities, stats, and scaling. Every champion has auto-attacks and abilities at their disposal. Auto-attacks, also known as \u201cbasic attacks\u201d occur when a player right clicks on a target. Doing so will cause a champion to continually attack a target until it dies.<\/p>\n

Abilities are cast using Q, W, E, and R. Every champion has abilities that are unique to them for each of these buttons. Here\u2019s Ashe\u2019s W, Volley, in action below:<\/p>\n

All champions also have access to two abilities, using D and F, called Summoner Spells. These are up to a player\u2019s personal preference, we\u2019ll discuss these later on. Lastly, champions can also cast abilities from items such as Redemption and Tiamat, using the number keys, 1-7.<\/p>\n

Minions of LOL<\/h4>\n

Coming down the lanes in waves every couple of minutes are minions, a source of gold income for your champion. In order to farm (get money) you must \u201clast hit\u201d each minion. You get nothing but experience if you don\u2019t get the last hit.<\/p>\n

For the newbie, last-hitting is harder than it sounds, and failing to do so is nothing to be ashamed of, even if your teammates tell you otherwise.<\/p>\n

Tip<\/strong>: Minions also help to push lanes and provide protection to champions from turret attacks. You should always ensure there are minions at the tower before attacking it.<\/p>\n

Tip<\/strong>: Do not attack an enemy champion under their tower as the tower will automatically turn on you, ignoring any minions between you.<\/p>\n

The Five LoL Roles<\/h4>\n

In a standard game of League of Legends, each of the five players on a team is assigned to one of the five specific roles. The five roles are Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, and Support.<\/p>\n

Before a match, you have the opportunity to select a primary role which indicates the role you\u2019d prefer to play, as well as a secondary role which represents a backup choice.<\/p>\n

Since roles vary in popularity, keep in mind that you are not guaranteed to get either of your primary or secondary choices. You can also choose an option to \u201cFill\u201d which means that you don\u2019t mind playing any of the roles.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a brand new player, we suggest that you spend time playing a few games of each role to get a feel for where each one operates and what each one does. Eventually, you do want to settle on a \u201cmain\u201d role because it can really help you improve faster and learn to specialize a particular skill set.<\/p>\n
